LASIK, which is an acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a very common procedure which uses refractive surgery to correct certain vision problems. LASIK surgery came about in the 1980s. There are a lot of conflicting views on the results and procedure itself. Before LASIK surgery, the only way to correct common vision problems was to wear glasses and contacts. LASIK surgery is typically used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Patients that have already had the LASIK eye surgery should no longer need glasses, or at least should not need as strong a prescription that they once used.

LASIK eye surgery basically reshapes the cornea to fit your eye using a laser on the inside of your eye. In other words, if your cornea does not fit perfectly in your eyes, a laser is used to remove some tissue from the eye. This will help to correct your vision.

Choosing a doctor that specializes in LASIK eye surgery and undergoing a thorough eye exam is extremely important. Make sure that you get all your questions asked and answered before you go into the surgery room. The doctor should meet with you at least once to see if you are comfortable with the entire process and to make sure that vision correction is the correct course of action for your particular vision problems.

What happens during the LASIK eye surgery? LASIK eye surgery is a pretty simple procedure. The first thing that you need to know is that about a month prior to the surgery, you should not wear any corrective lenses of any sort. When you wear a corrective lens it can force your cornea out of its natural shape. Also, no creams, lotions, or make up of any kind can be used for a period of time determined by your doctor before your undergoing the procedure.

On the day of your LASIK eye surgery, you will be given eye drops that will numb your eye. No injection will be necessary. Then, your doctor will have you lie on the table under the laser machine and tell you to watch the blinking light. The surgery is performed on one eye at a time. One eye will be shielded while the other will be kept open by a special device. Then, the doctor will make a small incision and use the laser directly on the cornea itself. Once the doctor is done, you are free to go home. The entire procedure lasts around 3-4 hours at the most.

Again, as with all surgeries, finding the best doctor to perform your LASIK eye surgery cannot be taken lightly. Make sure you are comfortable with the doctor.
