Custom LASIK Surgery vs. Traditional LASIK

Unlike traditional LASIK, Custom LASIK surgery measures your eyes with three-dimensional measurements to see how your eyes process images. This helps guide the laser when re-shaping the cornea, or the front part of the eye. This system, called wavefront, can achieve the ultimate in customizing the LASIK surgery experience to the individual eye, getting results that would be impossible with traditional LASIK surgery.

Before undergoing custom LASIK surgery, you have to qualify under Food and Drug Administration guidelines. Once you’re qualified, you’ll be asked by your surgeon whether you’d like to undergo a traditional LASIK surgery procedure or the customer LASIK surgery. Custom LASIK surgery costs more, but it could be your best option if you have unusual or difficult-to-correct vision defects, or if traditional LASIK surgery did not work out well in previous attempts.

Custom LASIK measures your eye’s ability to focus light rays from the front of the eye to the back. A three-dimensional map is then created, which will show any irregularities in the way your eyes process images. This map serves as a guide for the surgeon to customize how he will shape your eye for optimal results.

If you have more ordinary vision defects such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, traditional LASIK might be a better option. You can also use glasses or contact lenses with success. However, irregular and unusual properties with your eye’s image processing were unable to be correct surgically until custom LASIK came onto the scene.

Not only can custom LASIK improve your visual acuity (how much you can see, measured by a 20/20 eye chart), but it can improve how well you can see in terms of seeing fine detail and sensitivity to contrast. This reduces the risk of possible complications from LASIK, including halos, double vision, glare, ghost images, and night vision problems.

Vision defects called “lower-order aberrations” affect how much you can see. These aberrations are often associated with more common vision problems such as astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness. Traditional LASIK can successfully treat lower-order aberrations.

Higher-order aberrations affect how well you can see. These aberrations account for eye irregularities that are not as common as astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. Higher-order aberrations cause issues such as night vision, glare, halos, and decreased contrast sensitivity. Note, however, that higher-order aberrations do not necessarily affect one’s vision. While traditional LASIK usually treats lower-order aberrations, custom LASIK can treat both lower- and higher-order aberrations. Custom LASIK can also correct problems for people whose vision was affected by past attempts at laser eye correction surgery, such as traditional LASIK, PRK, or RK.
