How To Choose A LASIK MD

You are only born with a set of two eyes. Sight is arguably the most important of your 5 senses. If you are considering laser eye surgery, it only makes sense to select a LASIK MD that has the proper skills, experience, and qualifications to take care of your eyes. It pays to choose the best LASIK MD that you can afford. How can you find a good LASIK MD?

Advertising is the first place many people look when finding a LASIK MD. Many ads claim to be able to offer extremely low prices, which attract people to the clinics. While advertisements are a good way to introduce yourself to the LASIK MDs in your area, you should do more digging in order to find the right surgeon. Some ads might be a little misleading, claiming a doctor who has been using a laser for 15 years. Because LASIK is a relatively new procedure, the doctor might have been referring to another type of laser.

Don’t read too much into the advertisement. Instead, find out if the LASIK MD is associated with an academic medical center, such as a hospital with a reputation for advanced technology. This is because these doctors are usually current with the latest information and are attuned to any changes or problems with procedures. A LASIK MD who spends all of his or her time in a clinic might not be as current.

Choose a surgeon who is a member of the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. LASIK surgery is, after all, a surgical procedure. To be a credentialed member requires going through a rigorous process and a commitment to advancing the field of surgery.

Get a referral from your eyecare professional. He or she is better tuned to the reputations of the surgeons in your area.

Once you find a qualified practitioner, make an appointment to see them. Ensure that you will be consulting with the actual doctor who will perform the surgery, and not some salesperson disguised as a consultant or expert. Ask them tough questions. Some of the questions you should ask are:

1. How long have you been performing LASIK procedures? Three years is the minimum you should accept.
2. How many total procedures have you performed? No less than 500 should be accepted.
3. What is the exact procedure you intend to perform on me? What is the equipment you will be using?
4. How many procedures have you performed for my exact case and equipment?
5. What percentage of your patients ends up with 20/20 vision? 50% is about normal.
6. What percentage of your patients ends up with 20/40 vision? Be suspicious of numbers over 90%.
